Why this exists

Built by a student who got tired of the silence.

The idea came from watching my own teacher run a daily Google Form so students could flag how they were doing before class started. It worked well. But it was a generic form with no real structure, easy to forget, and impossible to build on.

Most students would rather say nothing than say "I'm not okay" in front of everyone. WellSpace gives them a way to say it privately, to the teacher they trust, in ten seconds.

Teachers get a simple dashboard showing who might need a check-in that day. Students control everything they share. Nothing is visible to anyone unless the student explicitly sends it.

This is not a school board system or an official records platform. It is a classroom tool, built the way it should have been built from the start.

🔒
Privacy first
Students control their own data at all times. Nothing is shared without their explicit action.
💚
Free forever
No subscriptions, no ads, no paywalls. No student or school should be priced out of wellness tools.
🎯
Human-centred
Every feature exists to help real students with real pressures, not to generate data.
🌱
Built in public
One student, one summer, building something real. No corporate backing. No venture capital.
How it works

Simple for students. Useful for teachers.

WellSpace runs in any browser with no download or installation. Teachers create a class and share a code. Students join with that code and start checking in.

01
Teacher creates a class
Takes two minutes. Set the subject, schedule, and generate an 8-character code to share with students.
02
Students join and check in
Students enter the code, sign up, and log how they're feeling at the start of each period. Ten seconds. They choose what to share.
03
Teacher sees what matters
The teacher dashboard shows who might need support today, based only on what students have chosen to share.
For educators

Does it need school board approval?

Individual teachers can use WellSpace independently in their own classrooms, the same way you would use Google Forms, Notion, or any other tool you choose to adopt on your own initiative. No board approval is needed for personal classroom use.

However, if your school board requires formal approval for third-party tools, or if you are looking to roll it out school-wide or district-wide, you can follow your board's standard process for third-party software and data agreements. WellSpace is transparent about its privacy practices and happy to provide any documentation your board needs.

That said, we understand that data privacy is a real concern in Ontario schools. Here is exactly how WellSpace handles data.

Is it free?
Yes. No subscriptions, no trials, no hidden fees. Free for teachers and students.
Is student data private?
Yes. Students share only what they choose to share. Nothing is visible by default.
Does it need approval?
Not for individual teacher use. For board-wide rollout, follow your board's standard third-party tool approval process.

How your data is stored

Student data is private by default. Nothing is shared with a teacher unless the student explicitly clicks "Share with Teacher."
Passwords are never stored by WellSpace. Firebase Authentication handles all credentials using industry-standard encryption.
Each user has their own private document. No shared blobs. No cross-user access. Firestore security rules are enforced server-side.
No advertising. No tracking pixels. No analytics. We use Google Firebase, EmailJS, and GitHub Pages only.
Students can delete their account instantly. All data is permanently removed with no retention.
Note on Canadian data storage: Firebase currently stores data on US-based Google servers by default. Canadian data residency (Montreal) is available on Firebase's paid tier. WellSpace is currently on the free tier. If your board requires Canadian-only data hosting, this is the current limitation to be aware of. We recommend using WellSpace as an independent classroom tool rather than a board-sanctioned system until this changes.
What people are saying

Real feedback from real teachers.

Hey as a teacher in Ontario who almost exclusively taught Grade 7 and 8, this is really awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make this and keep it free.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Student data is stored on Google Firebase, which provides encrypted connections (HTTPS) and strict per-user security rules. Each user's data is stored in their own private Firestore document. Note that Firebase's free tier uses US-based Google servers. Canadian data residency (Montreal) is available on Firebase's paid tier. We are transparent about this limitation and recommend individual teacher use rather than board-sanctioned rollout until this is resolved.
No. Teachers only see what a student explicitly chooses to share. Students have a "Share with Teacher" toggle on every entry, including mood check-ins, sleep logs, and wellness data. Private journal entries are never visible to anyone. If a student keeps something private, it stays private.
No. WellSpace is a classroom check-in tool, not a counselling or crisis intervention system. If a student shares something that requires escalation, teachers follow the same school procedures they normally would. WellSpace does include built-in province-specific crisis helpline resources so students know where to get real support when they need it.
Not for individual teacher use. You can use WellSpace the same way you would adopt any classroom tool independently, the same way teachers use Google Forms, Notion, or other tools without requiring district approval. For board-wide rollout, you would want to follow your board's standard process for third-party tools and data agreements.
There is no catch. WellSpace is free for teachers and students with no subscription, no trial period, and no ads. It is built and maintained by one student who believes no school should be priced out of a wellness tool. The only costs are Firebase's free tier limits, which we manage carefully.
No. Student responses are only visible to the teacher whose class they chose to share with. Other students cannot see any responses. The only people who can ever see a student's shared data are that student and the specific teacher they sent it to.
For students: daily mood check-ins per class period, a weekly goal planner, a sleep and wellness tracker, a private journal, and province-specific crisis helpline resources. For teachers: a student dashboard showing shared moods and wellness data, a class management system with codes, mood trend alerts, and a social worker contact field that appears when students log a negative mood.
Yes. WellSpace is a Progressive Web App that works in any browser on any device, including phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. No download or app store is required. Students can also add it to their home screen to use it like a native app.
Go to wellspaceapp.github.io/WellSpace, click "I'm a Teacher," sign up with your email, and create your first class. The whole setup takes under five minutes. Share the class code with your students and they can join immediately. You can also schedule a short walkthrough using the link in the Contact section below if you prefer to see it live first.

Help build something that matters.

WellSpace is one student building something real. There are parts of this that are too important to do alone. If any of the roles below sound like you, we want to hear from you.

💬 Community and Support
Handles replies, DMs, and questions from students and teachers. Helps new users get set up and flags anything that needs immediate attention. Good fit if you are organized and responsive.
🔍 Research and Strategy
Looks at what is working for similar youth-led and wellness projects, brings back real findings, and helps inform decisions about direction. Good fit if you like digging into information and presenting what you find clearly.
